Hypertension, or high blood pressure as it is more commonly known, is a condition where the force of the blood against the artery wall is very high. Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels. Hypertension affects one in every four Americans, with many not treating the condition. The most common reason being is that this condition is largely asymptomatic. This condition often quietly threatens an individual’s life without them knowing it. The more severe cases of hypertension present with symptoms including blurry vision, dizziness and fatigue. The difficulty with these symptoms is they could result in a number of medical conditions as they are fairly common. Some risk factors for hypertension include obesity, drinking, smoking, family history and high stress. If the condition is serious enough, you could potentially qualify for social security disability benefits.
If untreated, this condition can lead to heart attack, stroke, or even organ failure. In the most severe cases, even with medications and medical treatment, an individuals blood pressure may remain uncontrolled. The longer hypertension is left untreated, the more damage will be done to your body.
It is possible to apply for social security disability benefits on the basis of hypertension, depending upon the severity of your condition. I recently had two examples of individuals suffering from uncontrolled hypertension, with both individuals being approved for disability benefits. The first individual had a long history of suffering from uncontrolled hypertension, having the condition for over 25 years. The individual is now in his 60’s and suffering from kidney failure as a result of his longstanding high blood pressure. This individual has been under the constant care of a medical provider with the doctor monitoring his blood pressure and changing his medications around.
Unfortunately, his blood pressure largely remains uncontrolled. This individual was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease three years ago. Today, his condition has progressed to stage 5 requiring dialysis and a kidney transplant…all resulting from a significant history of uncontrolled hypertension. The other individual I mentioned has a very high-stress job, working 80 hours per week. He smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol regularly. This individual sustained a hypertensive stroke which left him paralyzed on his left side. The doctors related his stroke to uncontrolled high blood pressure. While this individual is now reviewing the proper care, he continues to have controlled blood pressure and is unable to work due to his left-sided weakness.
Both examples are extreme situations of uncontrolled blood pressure. If you have a history of struggling with hypertension and are experiencing significant side effects from the condition you should consider applying for social security disability. Even more important, if you have these symptoms you should seek medical care immediately!
