Regulators are starting to take notice. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is soon expected to issue new rules for carmakers. Senator Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) has come out and stated that the agency has the power to enact regulations to “prevent this kind of tragedy from occurring. They just need to use it. The new keyless ignition rules the NHTSA is considering have been sitting idle for far too long.”
The solution to this problem would most likely come in the form of some type of alarm that lets the driver know that the motor is still running even when the key fob is taken outside the car. One manufacturer has stated that such an alarm would cost roughly $5 per vehicle. Other options are that the car should automatically shut down once the key fob is removed from a running automobile.
Either way, inexpensive alarms or devices should be added to these vehicles in the interest of consumer safety. All too often large companies and corporations choose cost/profits over the safety of the consumer.
