The latest General Motors (GM) recalls have brought the company’s total up to 12.8 million cars. The most recent set of recalls added another 2.7 million cars with safety issues to the list. Earlier in the year, the company announced a major recall due to an ignition switch defect that led to several accidents and 13 deaths. GM has said that the increase in their recalls means the company is being more responsive to problems (since the announcement on the ignition switch) and that it does not mean the company’s vehicles are more problematic.
The latest set of 5 recalls includes brake problems, malfunctioning lights, windshield wiper failure and a tire-rod defect.
The following lists the different cars included in each recall:
- Low-beam Headlamp Failure: In 2005-2007 Chevrolet Corvettes, the low-beam headlamps can fail. This recall also includes some 2008-2013 model Corvettes that may experience the same problem. If you own a Corvette made between 2005 and 2013, be sure to call your dealership right away to see if your call falls into this recall.
- Steering Loss: Some 2014 Chevrolet Silverados have an issue with a tire-rod defect that can lead to steering loss. GM says the issue was found and fixed during assembly after a small number of vehicles was released. Other vehicles included in this recall are the 2014 GMC Sierra pickups and 2015 Chevy Tahoe SUVs.
- Windshield Wiper Failure: 2013-2014 Cadillac CTS sedans have been recalled for a potential windshield wiper failure. The wipers may malfunction if the car has to be jump-started and the wipers are still on but restricted (for example, with ice.)
- Brake Malfunction: This set of recalled vehicles includes the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu due to hydraulic-brake booster malfunction. It was discovered that a brake vacuum hose can become disconnected. This means the brakes take more force to apply, and the vehicle takes a longer distance to stop.
- Tail-lamp Malfunction: This defect could also disable cruise control, traction control, electronic stability control, and panic-braking assist features. The models included in the recall are:
- 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu
- 2004-2007 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
- 2005-2010 Pontiac G6
- 2007-2010 Saturn Aura
