There are several types of heart disease and cardiovascular issues which may affect your ability to work. When determining eligibility for Social Security disability benefits, The Social Security Administrations (SSA) considers your limitations which are caused by your cardiovascular condition. Some of the main cardiovascular conditions I come across in my daily practice include coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, heart attacks or arrhythmias.
The number one question when applying for disability benefits is how your condition affects your ability to work. Does it just prevent you from performing the jobs you have done in the past? Or does it preclude all work at any level? The way to determine what type of jobs you can do is to figure out exactly what your functional limitations are. Meaning, how does your condition affect or limit you? Your work capacity is determined by your residual functional capacity (RFC). Meaning what is the “most” you can do considering the effects of your disability. SSA learns what your capabilities are by performing an RFC assessment. This is done by reviewing your medical records, specifically your tests and what your current treating doctors are saying. Oftentimes SSA will have a medical doctor review your medical file to make a functional capacities determination.
One thing you can do to help SSA assess your RFC is asked your doctor to give an opinion. Generally, your treating physician will be in the best position to determine what your physical capabilities are. Another thing you can do to improve your odds of being approved for disability benefits is to seek representation from an experienced disability attorney. Your disability attorney will develop a legal basis for your disability claim, make sure you have the proper medical evidence to support this theory, and then maintain all communications with the Social Security Administration.
