This is due to the bumper height differential between these large vehicles and that of other cars on the road. The federal government has set minimum bumper performance requirements for passenger cars, but those regulations do not apply to vans, pickups or SUVs. Bumpers are designed to withstand impacts to protect the frame of the vehicle, while the areas above or below the bumpers are not. Collisions that involve differences in bumper height can also cause more severe injuries.
