In addition to obeying all local laws regarding the use of fireworks, here are some fireworks safety tips to keep your family safe this 4th of July holiday:
- Don’t use fireworks until after you read the instructions.
- Only allow a responsible adult to light the fireworks.
- Children using sparklers should have adult supervision at all times. Instruct the kids not to sword fight or poke each other with them. Kids don’t realize how dangerous sparklers are. Hundreds of children are injured by sparklers every year.
- Alcohol and fireworks never mix. Save your alcohol for after your lighting of explosive devices.
- Always wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks. Bottle rockets can easily shoot into people’s eyes, so keep your eyes safely covered whenever possible.
- Don’t light fireworks more than one at a time. Once lit, you must move away quickly. If there appears to be a dud, wait at least five minutes before approaching.
- Finally, as silly as it may sound, never use your fireworks indoors. Every year a house burns down because someone lit off fireworks inside.
And don’t forget about the safety of our pets! You may want your beloved furry friend to join in on the fun this 4th of July, but many animals become frightened by the loud noises and burning smells of fireworks and are likely to run away if they’re not kept indoors.
